What to wear in Mombasa Old Town

In Mombasa Old Town, cover shoulders and knees in case a mosque entrance is offered. Fort Jesus needs ordinary covered clothing and shoes with a grip. Swimwear stays at Nyali or the hotel pool.

Old Town and mosques

The walking tour can pass Mandhry Mosque and other prayer buildings. The default is to stay on the street. If an entrance is possible, everyone covers shoulders and knees. A scarf is worth carrying. Shoes may need to come off, so choose a pair you can remove quickly. We do not enter during prayers unless the mosque has agreed.

Fort, park, and beach

Fort Jesus is a museum on open ramparts. Covered shoulders are still the sensible choice, plus a hat and water. The stone can be slick after rain. Haller Park is shaded in places and still hot. Nyali is where swimwear belongs. If one day mixes a beach and the fort, bring a cover-up and use it before you reach Old Town. The route rules are on the Old Town and Fort Jesus tour.

Questions

Do I need a headscarf?

Carry one if you hope to step into a mosque. Many visits never go inside, and the scarf stays in the bag.

Can I wear shorts at Fort Jesus?

Covered shoulders and a longer short or trousers are the safer choice. Beachwear is a poor fit for the museum and a worse fit for Old Town.

What shoes work?

Closed shoes or firm sandals with a grip. The fort stone is uneven.
