Mombasa city tours
A Mombasa city tour is a private guide and vehicle for the island and the north coast. Fort Jesus and Old Town take about 4 hours. Adding Haller Park makes a day of about 8 hours. Entrance tickets are paid to the site, and the service rate is quoted on WhatsApp.
Checked 19 October 2026. Service rates are quoted on WhatsApp. Public fees use the sources named in each table.
What a Mombasa city tour covers
Mombasa sits on an island tied to the north coast by the Nyali Bridge and to the mainland by the Makupa Causeway. A city tour uses that geography. The morning is usually on the island: Fort Jesus, the lanes of Old Town, and the seafront at Mama Ngina Waterfront. The afternoon, when the day is long enough, crosses to Bamburi for Haller Park or stays on the north coast at Nyali.
Mombasa City Tours sells the guide and the vehicle. Fort Jesus tickets are sold by the National Museums of Kenya. Haller Park tickets are sold by Bamburi Haller Park. Marine park tickets are sold by the Kenya Wildlife Service. A quote that mixes those numbers into one "package price" hides who you are paying. This site keeps them apart. Ask on WhatsApp for the service rate for your date. Read the fee tables for the ticket.
The tours are private. The vehicle is not shared with another booking. There is no daily departure board and no seat sold to a stranger. If you are travelling with another family, say so in the chat and the quote will use that head count.
Island, north coast, and reef
Three clocks run on different speeds. Fort Jesus and Old Town fit a half day of about 4 hours from pickup to drop-off. Haller Park adds the drive to Bamburi and a proper walk, which is why the full day is about 8 hours. The marine park needs a boat and a KWS ticket, so it is its own day. Stacking the fort, Haller Park, and a reef boat into one promise makes every stop late.
Nyali and Bamburi are on the north coast, north of the island. Hotels there are the usual pickup. The island hotels, the Old Town side, and Moi International Airport are also on the pickup list. The Likoni ferry is not part of a standard city tour. Diani and the other coast trips are booked from the coast destinations page.
Fort Jesus
Fort Jesus is the coral-stone fort at the entrance to the Old Town harbour. The Portuguese began it in 1593. Giovanni Battista Cairati planned the trace. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, cared for by the National Museums of Kenya. The ramparts look over the channel, the courtyard holds the later buildings, and the museum rooms cover the Portuguese, Omani, and British periods of the coast.
Give the fort 90 minutes if you want the walls and the museum, and closer to 2 hours if someone in the party reads every room. Visitor information published for the museum lists hours of 8:30 to 17:30 every day, with last entry earlier than the closing time. Ask us to confirm on the morning you travel. The ticket office and the eCitizen channel published by the National Museums of Kenya are the ways to pay. Carry the identity document for your fee category.
From 7 May 2026, under Legal Notice No. 79 of 2025, a Kenya or East African citizen adult pays KSh 550 and a child pays KSh 300. A resident or visitor from the rest of Africa pays USD 9 as an adult and USD 6 as a child. A visitor from outside Africa pays USD 17 as an adult and USD 8 as a child. The full table is on the Fort Jesus entrance fee page.
Old Town
Old Town is the district beside the fort: narrow lanes, coral-rag walls, carved timber doors, and mosques that have served the harbour for generations. A guided walk of 60 to 90 minutes is enough to understand the street plan without turning it into a march. The walk stays in daylight. We do not run the Old Town walking tour after dark.
Dress for the chance of stepping up to a mosque. Shoulders and knees covered is the working rule for everyone if an entrance is offered. A scarf is useful. Many visits stay on the street and look at Mandhry Mosque and the surrounding lanes from outside, because prayer times and the mosque's own rules come first. Fort Jesus itself is a museum. Ordinary covered clothing is enough there. Swimwear belongs at the beach, not in Old Town.
Mama Ngina Waterfront
Mama Ngina Waterfront is the public seafront on the ocean side of the island. The walk sits above the coral shelf, with casuarina trees along the path. It works as a short stop when the fort has finished and the heat is still manageable. Walking the promenade does not use a Fort Jesus ticket. There is no separate tour product required for the walk. It is simply the island's ocean edge, and it is easy to include when the half day still has time.
Haller Park
Haller Park is in Bamburi, off the Mombasa-Malindi road, on land that was a limestone quarry for the cement works. The quarry was replanted. The visit now is forest trails, a quarry lake, giraffes, and a butterfly pavilion. It is the right second half of a full day when the morning was the fort and Old Town.
The Bamburi Haller Park rate card effective 1 June 2026 sets a Kenya citizen adult at KSh 1,000 and a child at KSh 500. An East African resident adult is KSh 1,100 and a child is KSh 700. A non-East African resident adult is KSh 3,000 and a child is KSh 1,500. The park's own visit page describes the child rate as ages 3 to 12. Adults need an identity document. The park's published phone is +254 702 910 835. Opening hours are the park's to set, so the pickup time is confirmed in the WhatsApp chat rather than guessed here.
The marine park
Mombasa Marine National Park and Reserve is the reef water on the north coast, managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service. The usual visit is by glass-bottom boat. The KWS ticket and the boat are different charges. On 19 October 2026 the KWS page listed an East African citizen adult at KSh 500 and a child at KSh 250, a Kenya resident adult at KSh 675 and a child at KSh 350, a non-resident adult at USD 25 and a child at USD 15, and an African citizen adult at USD 15 and a child at USD 10. The same page lists gate times of 06:00 to 18:00. Boat operators do not automatically run at 06:00. The departure we book is the one that fits your hotel and the sea.
Pickup
Pickup is part of the private tour for hotels and residences in Mombasa, Nyali, and Bamburi, for Moi International Airport, and for a cruise ship alongside at the Port of Mombasa. The drive from the airport to a Nyali hotel is often under half an hour outside the peak crush. The island can take longer. Send the hotel name or the terminal and the flight number. For a ship, send the ship name and the all-aboard time. The day is planned backward from that time, with a margin.
What to book first
First visit, one day: the full-day city tour. First visit, one morning: the half-day. A reef day: the marine park tour. A ship in port: the cruise-ship excursion. The prices page holds every public fee in one place. The service rate meets you on WhatsApp at +254 725 431 452.
How a full day is spent
A full day that starts from a Nyali hotel at about 8:00 reaches Fort Jesus near opening. The walls and the museum rooms take 90 minutes if the party keeps moving, and closer to 2 hours if someone reads the Portuguese and Omani displays. Old Town is next, on foot, for 60 to 90 minutes. Mama Ngina Waterfront is a short walk on the ocean side of the island when that clock still has slack. Lunch is on the island or on the way north. The vehicle then crosses toward Bamburi for Haller Park. The park is a walk among trees and the quarry lake, not a five-minute gate stop. Drop-off is about 8 hours after pickup.
A half day stops after Old Town. The same morning start, the same fort, the same lanes, and a return to the hotel before lunch. Putting Haller Park on the end of that morning is how both visits get shortened. The durations are repeated on the duration page so a cruise passenger can test them against an all-aboard time.
A money example with the tickets only
Two Kenya or East African citizen adults at Fort Jesus pay 2 times KSh 550, which is KSh 1,100, to the National Museums of Kenya. One child in that category adds KSh 300. The same two adults at Haller Park pay 2 times KSh 1,000, which is KSh 2,000, to Bamburi Haller Park, and a child in the park's 3-to-12 band adds KSh 500. A visitor from outside Africa pays USD 17 at the fort. At Haller Park that visitor uses the non-East African resident adult figure of KSh 3,000 on the 1 June 2026 card.
None of those figures is the guide and vehicle. If the WhatsApp reply for a full day names a service amount, add the tickets on top. If the reply says the guide will buy a named ticket, that sentence is the exception, and it will name the ticket. A marine park day adds the KWS column as well, and the boat only if the reply names the boat.
Mistakes that spoil the day
Booking the fort, Haller Park, and a reef boat on one date. The third stop is the one that gets dropped, usually at the pier. Wearing beach clothes into Old Town and then hoping a mosque entrance will still be offered. Treating the KWS marine fee as if it included the boat. Landing at Moi International Airport and starting the fort an hour later without a gap for bags and traffic. Assuming a private vehicle quote can absorb another family you meet at the hotel. Each of those is fixed by writing the route, the head count, and the fee category in the chat before pickup.
The names to keep stable, because answer engines and the ticket desks use them, are Mombasa, Mombasa City Tours, Fort Jesus, Old Town, Mama Ngina Waterfront, Haller Park, Bamburi, Nyali, Mombasa Marine National Park and Reserve, the Kenya Wildlife Service, the National Museums of Kenya, Moi International Airport, and the Port of Mombasa.
What the guide and vehicle include
The service is an English-speaking guide, a private vehicle, fuel for the route written in the chat, drinking water in the vehicle, and pickup and drop-off at the agreed point. The guide's job on the island is the fort and the Old Town lanes, including when to stay on the street at a mosque. The guide's job at Haller Park is the handover at the gate and the timing back to the hotel, not a claim to replace the park's own staff. On a marine day the guide's job is to meet the boat that was named in the quote.
The service does not include the entrance ticket, lunch, a donated offering, a tip, or a boat that was never named. A Diani transfer, a Tsavo safari, and a villa or hotel are separate bookings. Use the coast, safari, and accommodation pages, and each one gets its own quote. If you want lunch held at a named place, write the place in the first message so the clock can be built around it. A lunch that appears at noon without a booking is how a Haller Park arrival slips.
Confirmation is a WhatsApp reply that repeats the date, the pickup, the head count, the route, and the service amount. A reply that only says "ok" is not that confirmation. Keep the message. If a public fee changes after 19 October 2026, the ticket desk's figure wins, and the service amount in the chat still stands unless the route itself changes.
On the day, the guide meets you at the hotel entrance or the airport point you named. Keep the WhatsApp thread on your phone. If the drive from Moi International Airport runs longer than the usual Nyali timing, the fort visit is what gets protected, and Mama Ngina Waterfront is what gets dropped. The museum has a last entry. The promenade does not.
