Watamu from Mombasa

Watamu is a north-coast beach and marine park about 110 km from Mombasa, usually 2 to 3 hours by road. It is a day or an overnight, not a stop on the Fort Jesus tour. The vehicle is private.

Checked 19 October 2026. The 110 km and 2 to 3 hour figures are for the coast road in ordinary traffic.

The drive

The photograph at the top is Mombasa, the city the trip starts from. The road runs north through Mtwapa and Kilifi. Watamu Marine National Park is the reef beside the beach. A boat and the Kenya Wildlife Service ticket are separate from the vehicle, and only if you ask for the reef. Arabuko Sokoke forest sits between Watamu and Malindi and is listed with other Kenya tours.

Malindi is a short hop further north if the same trip should cover both. Say so in the first message. Two beaches and a reef boat on one arrival day is how the boat gets missed.
