Old Town and Fort Jesus tour

This tour pairs Fort Jesus with a daylight walk in Mombasa Old Town. Allow about 90 minutes inside the fort and 60 to 90 minutes in the lanes. The vehicle is private. The museum ticket is paid to the National Museums of Kenya.

Order of the visit

Pickup comes first, then Fort Jesus while the ramparts are still in easier light. The fort needs 90 minutes for the walls and the museum rooms, or closer to 2 hours for a slow reading of the displays. Old Town follows on foot. The lanes sit against the fort, so the vehicle waits rather than trailing the group through every corner.

The walk looks at carved doors, coral-rag walls, and the street pattern of a harbour town. Mandhry Mosque is treated from the street unless the mosque's own timing allows a respectful look inside. Shoulders and knees stay covered. The clothing page is the short version.

Time and ticket

Door to door, put this tour at about 4 hours. That matches the half-day city tour. Mama Ngina Waterfront can be added when the fort has not run long. It should not be promised if you also want a relaxed Old Town walk.

Citizen adults pay KSh 550 at Fort Jesus. Adults visiting from outside Africa pay USD 17. Children in those categories pay KSh 300 and USD 8. Residents and visitors from the rest of Africa pay USD 9 as adults and USD 6 as children. Details sit on the fee page.

Who it suits

Choose this tour for a first morning, a cruise day with a hard all-aboard time, or any party that wants the history more than the reef. Parties with small children who will not manage the fort walls often do better at Haller Park. The comparison is on Fort Jesus or Haller Park.
