Getting around Mombasa
Mombasa island is small enough for a tuk-tuk between nearby stops. Nyali, Haller Park, and the airport are drives. Bolt operates in the city. The Likoni ferry is for the south coast, which these city tours do not cross.
On the island
Old Town, Fort Jesus, and Mama Ngina Waterfront sit close together. A tuk-tuk is the ordinary short hop. Agree the fare before you sit down. Walking the Old Town lanes is normal in daylight with a guide. Walking from a Nyali hotel to the fort is not a plan.
Off the island
Nyali Bridge links the island to the north coast. Haller Park is further along the Mombasa-Malindi road in Bamburi. Moi International Airport is on the mainland. Those three are why the tour uses a private van. Bolt and local taxis also cover them when you are not on a tour. Matatus run the main roads if you already know the route.
The Likoni ferry joins the island to Likoni and the south coast. A standard city tour does not board it. South-coast beaches are a different day. Airport and hotel handovers are on the pickup page.
Questions
Should I take a tuk-tuk to Haller Park?
No. Use the tour vehicle or a taxi. A tuk-tuk is for short island hops. Agree the fare first.
Does the city tour use the Likoni ferry?
No. The ferry is the way to the south coast. These tours stay on the island and the north coast.
Can I visit Fort Jesus without a guide?
Yes. The ticket is sold by the museum. A guide is for the context and the Old Town lanes, not for permission to enter.
